During the pandemic, masks have become an indispensable part of our lives.
On March 3, Ursuline Sister of Youngstown Darla Vogelsang began teaching sewing at the Beatitude House Immigrant Outreach location in Youngstown. It didn’t take long for our group there to figure out which masks were our “favorite” to wear for comfort and protection, so everyone in the group was excited to test our hand at mask-making. Through Sister Darla’s tips and extensive knowledge of all things sewing, we carefully began to cut, sew, stitch and finagle our masks.
It was exciting to see our masks come together! Lydia and Fay both had a natural knack for sewing and created beautiful masks. I, on the other hand, needed to dissect my mask the following week to make some size and stitching adjustments. Sister Darla is hoping to expand our sewing circle after some of the current members hone their skills and become mentors to other women in the group.
Although we all hope that the pandemic is soon coming to an end, I am thankful that masks have given me the opportunity to learn a new skill and form new relationships. I cannot wait to see what the group creates next!
