Mission, Equity & Resilience Dir.
For four hours, Aubrey, Lucy and I stood side by side and made over 800 ham and cheese sandwiches.
Families leaving the respite center each received four sandwiches and eight snacks as they left the respite center, heading for their next destination either by bus or by plane.
Their destination depended on where a family member or sponsor might be located. In the course of our time there, we watched exhausted families leave for Charlotte, Dallas, Washington DC, Fort Myers, Denver and more -- with not much else than the clothes on their backs, those sandwiches, and hope.
As we layered two slices of wheat bread, one slice of American cheese, and one thin slice of deli ham, I began to pray that every person fed by this food would be safe. I prayed that the risk they took to leave their home and embark on a treacherous, long journey would lead them to a place where they could thrive, feel welcome and live in peace.
I know for many, if not most, that is still a long, difficult journey. I felt humbled to be a small part of it.
I prayed that their journey, sustained by a sandwich and the generosity of those who run and support the center on a daily basis, brings them Fullness of Life.
